Regueifa and Biscuit Workshop
Valongo
It's impossible to remain indifferent to the invasion of ancestral aromas and flavours that have made Valongo the "Land of Bread, Regueifa and Biscoito".
The production of bread and biscuits is a secular tradition in Valongo. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, local bakeries supplied the city of Porto with various types of bread – sêmeas, moletes and regueifas – brought by the women from Valongo. However, the rise of industrialisation led to the emergence of biscuit bakeries, a new segment of production that was in great demand.
The Oficina da Regueifa e do Biscoito is a place that pays homage to the intangible heritage left by this activity, where you can find memories and objects from other times. The “From Grain to Bread” exhibition explains, interactively and dynamically, the entire cycle of Valongo bread making, and visitors can bake biscuits in an proper room.
Those who like to wander should also follow the Grão ao Pão Route, a 1.5-kilometre path that takes you through the city’s old quarter and the places that marked the development of the bread-making industry.
