Replica of a 16th Century Carrack and Royal Customs

Vila do Conde

Journeys that were made, trades that were established and places that were unveiled by the breaking of uncertain currents and seas.

In Vila do Conde, the shipbuilding industry peaked in the 16th century, during the Age of Discovery, and this craft became an important local tradition that continues to this day.

To honour that time, at the Alfândega Régia – Museum of Naval Construction there is a permanent exhibition detailing Portuguese navigation, the local shipbuilding industry and the workings of the building itself.

This expedition won’t be complete without boarding the 16th century ship, a replica created in 2007 from the ancestral knowledge of the carpenters and caulkers in the shipyards of Vilaconde. On board this impressive ship, you’ll discover how the crew was made up, what their quarters were like, what goods were transported, the navigational instruments used, and much more.

Opening hours:

Tuesday to Sunday
Tuesday to Friday: 10 am – 6 pm
