The Filigree Route

Gondomar

Gondomar is recognised as the "Capital of Jewellery".

Filigree is a jewellery technique that results from a long and meticulous process of casting and handling very fine threads of gold or silver, which, when combined, adorn delicate and valuable pieces of jewellery.

Gondomar, a symbolic centre of Portuguese goldsmithing, highlights the art of filigree as one of the most important creations of its local goldsmiths who, in small family workshops, replicate ancestral techniques passed down through heredity.

Starting at the Municipal Filigree Museum, the Filigree Route takes you to see the authenticity and traditionalism of the workshops and people who keep this activity alive, where you can observe the technique up close and buy a piece you like. This route also allows you to visit the region’s large factories and companies responsible for generating around 60 per cent of Portugal’s jewellery production.

You can participate in filigree and chiselling workshops at CINDOR, the Professional Training Centre for the Jewellery and Watchmaking Industry.
