Castromil Gold Mines

Paredes

With the lantern on, we follow the footsteps of those miners who have persistently searched, in narrow and dark chambers, for the presence of a golden sparkle.

In Paredes, in the region of Castromil and Banjas, you’ll find one of the wealthiest areas that produced the most gold for the Roman Empire, which allowed it to inherit a rich mining treasure dating back more than 2,000 years.

Inaugurated in 2013, the Interpretation Centre for the Gold Mines of Castromil and Banjas (CIMOCB) serves as a place for welcoming visitors and learning about the geological, archaeological and cultural heritage of the region, as well as a starting point for the walking tour of the Castromil Gold Mines.

Fully equipped and with your torch on, venture inside the explorations and be amazed by the traces of mining that can be found there, such as galleries, shafts and underground workings. Don’t be alarmed by the presence of small night owls, usually turned upside down; they are the guardians of the treasures of Castromil and Banjas.
