Santeiros do Vale do Coronado
Trofa
The Sacred Art of the Santeiros of São Mamede do Coronado is one of Trofa's oldest traditions.
The production of religious imagery rose to prominence in the 20th century, when Master José Ferreira Thedim gave shape to the image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, a work cherished by believers on display in the Chapel of Apparitions in the Sanctuary of Fatima.
In the workshops of the Coronado Valley, the religious image is carved, a process that requires great mastery of the tools and techniques used, as well as knowledge of the raw materials, which can be wood, marble, ançã stone, or ivory.
Today, only six santirs are still active, ensuring the transmission of this ancestral know-how in small workshops, some of which have become real schools.
