Chapel of Souls
Porto
One of the most photographed buildings in Porto.
The Chapel of Souls, once known as the Chapel of St Catherine, originates from an old wooden church built in the name of this saint, which, in the first half of the 18th century, underwent through a reconstruction work that can still be seen today.
Its emblematic façade comprises over 15,000 blue and white tiles covering 360 m2 of wall, narrating the lives of the beloved local saints, St Francis of Assisi and St Catherine.
The art of tiling is a source of pride in Porto and a way of expressing the city’s values, beliefs, customs, and noble history. The uniqueness of this art can be appreciated all over the city. Most of the historical monuments are accompanied by these beautiful, detailed tiles, painted one by one before being applied to the walls of the buildings.
Lose yourself in the details of these celestial-coloured panels, and feel free to photograph their various angles and shapes. You certainly won’t be the only one to do so.
