Santa Maria de Arouca Monastery

Arouca

It is one of the country's best regional collections of sacred art, with over 800 years of history.

Located in the heart of Arouca, this national monument was a major driving force behind the territory’s growth, influencing its economy, gastronomy, culture and religiosity.

Its foundation dates back to the 10th century, and the original building has undergone several transformations. Exclusively female from the 12th century onwards, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Arouca was the home of one of the granddaughters of the first King of Portugal, D. Mafalda, and is considered one of the most important monasteries in the Iberian Peninsula.

We suggest visiting the church, cloister, chancel and nuns’ choir. You’ll be able to see unique pieces of Baroque art that form part of the Museum’s valuable collection, be enchanted by the majestic sound of the pipe organ and explore the Order’s kitchen, which is used to make the famous convent sweets.
